zipped file size total for 5 years: 23MB unzipped size(after download): approx 120MB
Full virus checks have not been done on these files. It is the downloader's responsibilty to do so before use. You have been warned!
No support on using these files is offered or volunteered. You're on your own!
In the event of problems installing archives, (assuming I have time) I will try to help. Just post something on the list, or to me at puresilver dot snarf dot net.
What you need to do:
To use these Pure Silver Archive Files you will need a copy of Eudora Mail (PC or Mac) which can be downloaded FREE from
Install Eudora and setup a mail Folder called "pure-silver archives"
do NOT setup a mailbox within that folder even though it prompts you to do it. (it won't cause a problem if you do but you don't need to create a mailbox)
After doing the above, locate the directory which has the folder name "pure-silver archives.fol".
It will be named something like c:\program files\eudora\pure-silver archives.fol
This will depend on where you specified the data files to be in your Eudora installation and it is the folder into which you should place the zip files you are about to download.
next download the zip files and unzip them into the "pure-silver archives.fol" folder wherever it is.
Year 2000 3.0MB
Year 2001 3.9MB
Year 2002 5.2MB
Year 2003 6.8MB
Year 2004 4.4MB
Next start Eudora and open the "pure-silver archives" mail folder. You should see the list of monthly archive files.
Next open the first one, i.e. "2000 01". If you get a dialogue screen telling you that the table of contents is corrupt, select the option to rebuild the table of contents. You may get this message with every mailbox but if I've done everything correctly you won't.
Thats all there is to it. You now have a full set of Pure-Silver archives from 2000 thru 2004.
Searching:
To do a search use the top menu options "Edit" / "Find" / "Find Messages"
uncheck Eudora at the top and check "Pure-Silver Archives" to select all archive files.
Select the search criteria from the drop menus and enter your search strings. Use "more" to combine criteria.
The search facility works well, listing the post titles containing found criteria which can then be clicked on to open the post.
Messages in mail folders can be sorted in date or user or thread sequence etc.
You could create a new mailbox and copy all message from all months into it and then sort by name/thread etc.
However, on my slow old 400MHZ pc opening the mailbox is slow since it would be a 120MB mailbox. Faster PC's probably wouldn't have a problem.
About the archives:
These archives have had some minor edits to remove some very large images that were embedded in them. Also some early HTML messages screwed up the formatting of the message and some of these were deleted. They are also missing 2004 10 and 2004 11 which were two months during which the list was in melt down mode and abuse was flying. There was very little if anything in the way of useful photography information for those months. There were some virus emails sent to the list which found their way into the archives. I think I have removed them all but you should do your own virus checks. They never caused me a problem.
There are a few messages which appear in the wrong position/month/Year. This is because people have posted messages when their PC's clock is set incorrectly, sometimes several years wrong like 1980. Once the original archive files were cleansed and sorted they appeared out of the sequence the mail servers received them in.
Apart from this the files are complete.
Download file sizes are relatively small due to zipping and table of contents is ommitted. TOC will be automatically generated when you open the archive files in Eudora. This will add approx 10-20% space to unzipped file sizes.
Mac users.
The eudora .mbx files have been PC'd. i.e. they have PC end of line/newline characters. This may cause Mac users to experience garbled messages with no line breaks. If this happens then open each .mbx file in word or a text editor and insert a blank line in line 1 of the file and save the file. This should force the correct newline characters to be generated after which all should be OK. If you are getting this problem then experiment on one .mbx file first and if it works then do the rest. If it doesn't work then put it down to experience. I have no Mac so its not tested on a Mac.
Good luck.
